Building a Digital Platform for P2P Energy Trading

Industry: Utilities

Intro/Goal:

The  main goal was to create a transactive energy platform for a utility company,  enabling it to sell renewable energy through a fully digital application.  This platform aims to support the adoption of distributed energy resources  and facilitate a peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading system, contributing to  the global market's shift towards sustainable and decentralized energy  solutions.

Challenges:

  • Technological  Integration: Incorporating new technologies like Blockchain and Artificial  Intelligence to ensure secure and efficient energy trading.
  • Market  Adaptation: Aligning with the new energy paradigm (5Ds: Decarbonization,  Decentralization, Digitalization, Democratization, Deregulation) and engaging  new market participants (citizens, entrepreneurs) with varied interests.
  • Regulatory  Environment: Navigating the regulatory landscape to enable P2P energy trading  within the legal framework of Colombia, where utility companies are expected  to play a pivotal role.

Solution:

The  solution involved developing a minimum viable product (MVP) that allows  self-generators to sell their surplus energy to other generators using  advanced technologies. This digital platform encompasses functionalities for  meter reading, criticism, billing, invoicing, and online payments,  streamlining all interactions between prosumers and the utility company. It  also aims at promoting energy savings through an efficient energy system.

My Role:

As a  Technical Product Manager, I played a crucial role in bridging the gap  between the project’s stakeholders, including development teams, end  customers, and the business side. My responsibilities included understanding  and translating the needs and requirements into actionable development tasks,  ensuring the alignment between the project’s goals and the technical  solutions provided. My collaboration with the UX team was significant in  synchronizing the project’s needs with the technical execution, leading to  successful outcomes.

Results:

  • Successful  Deployment: Launching a functional transactive energy platform that  facilitates P2P energy trading.
  • Enhanced  Digital Interaction: Achieving a fully digitalized process for energy  transactions, including metering, billing, and payments.
  • Energy  Savings: Providing tools and mechanisms for energy savings in businesses and  homes through the platform’s efficient energy management system.
